ANECDOTE
TEXT 1

What a clever boy to paint on the bottom half of the paper! Jimmy did it and it made him famous.
Jimmy started painting when he was three years old. When he was five, he was already very good at it. He painted many beautiful and interesting pictures. People paid a lot of many for them. They said, this boy is going to be famous when he’s little older. Then we’re going to sell these picture for a lot of money.”
Jimmy’s pictures were different from other people’s because he never painted on all of the paper. He painted on half of it, and the other half was always empty.
“That’s very clever,” everybody said” nobody else does that!”
One day somebody bought one of Jimmy’s pictures. Then said to him,” Please tell me this, Jimmy. Why do you paint on the bottom half of your pictures, but not on the top half.?”
“Because I’m small,” Jimmy said, “and my brushes don’t reach very high.”

Do you speak English?

I had an amusing experience last year.
After I had left a small village in the south of France, I drove on to the next town. On the way, a young man waved to me. I stopped and he asked me for a lift. As soon as he had got into the car, I said good morning to him in French and he replied in the same language.
Apart from a few words, I do not know any French at all. Neither of us spoke during the journey.
I had nearly reached the town, when the young man suddenly said, very slowly. “Do you speak English?” As I soon learnt, he was English himself.

“is there a river near there?” he asked his mother on the first morning.
His mother answered,” No, there isn’t, but the there’s a beautiful park near here, Jimmy, and there’s a pool in it. We’ll go there this afternoon.” Then jimmy was happy.
After lunch, Jimmy and his mother went to the park. Jimmy wanted to walk near the pool, but there was a sign in front of it. His mother read to him: “WARNING: this pool is dangerous. 367 people have fallen into it. “ Jimmy looked into the pool carefully. Then he said, “I can’t see them.”

SAN FRANSISCO

San Francisco is my favorite city in the United States. It is beautiful, clean, not too big, and it has something for everybody. I love the streets and buildings in San Francisco. The streets wind up and down the hills, with a beautiful old brick and wooden houses on either side.
One of my favorite things to do in San Francisco is to ride the cable car. It takes you to most parts of the city. It’s not a very comfortable ride, but it’s exciting and the view you get from the car are wonderful.
And I like the weather in San Francisco. It never gets too cold or too hot. The summers are pleasant. The fresh breezes blow off the ocean and the sky is always blue. It rains quite a lot in the winter, but it never gets very cold.
Another thing I enjoy about the city is the restaurants. The seafood restaurants, with crabs and lobster, are my favorites. You can also great Chinese, Japanese, American and European food in San Francisco.

THE CHIPMUNK THAT RAN AWAY

There once lived a nervous little chipmunk. She was always afraid that something terrible would happen to her.
One day, she said over and over again. Suppose the sky fell in, what would happen to me? She heard a slight noise. It was really only an apple that fell to the ground. But the little Chipmunk was so nervous that she was ready to believe anything and said in frightened voice, “The sky is falling in.” Then she ran away as fast as she could go.
Soon she met an old brother Chipmunk, who asked, “Where are you running to, little Chipmunk?”
And the nervous little Chipmunk answered, “I have no time to stop and tell you anything. The sky is falling in, and I am running away.”
“The sky is falling in, is it?” said the old brother Chipmunk, very much surprised. And he told the story to his brother Chipmunk, until at last there were a hundred brother Chipmunk shouting, “The sky is falling in.”
Soon the larger animals heard what the Chipmunks were saying. The Deer, the Sheep, the Pig, The Camel, the Tiger, and the Elephant began to say, “The sky is Falling in.”
Now the wise Lion heard all the noise and wondered what was happening. Then he stopped all the animals and asked, “What are you saying?” And the brother Chipmunks said, “Oh we heard it from that little Chipmunk!” And the Lion said, “Little Chipmunk, what made you say that the sky was falling in?” And the little Chipmunk said, “I saw it over by the tree.”
“Well,” said the lion,” Come with me and will show you how….”. “I am going to take you on my back.” And he took her on his back, and begged the animals to stay where they were until the returned. Then he showed the little Chipmunk how the apple had fallen upon the ground, making the noise that had frightened her. The little Chipmunk said, “yes, I see. The sky is not falling in.”
The Lion said, “Let’s go back and tell the other animals.”
So they went back. At last all the animals knew that the sky was not falling in, and there was peace once again in the land.
